Vanessa Z Chan Ph.D.

Vice-Dean Innovation & Entrepreneurship

University of Pennsylvania

Vanessa Z. Chan is an accomplished entrepreneur, angel investor, speaker and educator renowned for her expertise in commercializing technologies. She is the inaugural Vice Dean of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Engineering School, the Undergraduate Chair of the Materials Science & Engineering department, the Director of the Engineering Entrepreneurship Program and the Jonathan & Linda Brassington Professor of Practice. In 2021, Dr. Chan was appointed by President Biden to serve as the Chief Commercialization Officer at the U.S. Department of Energy and the Director of the Office of Technology Transitions. In this role, she was instrumental in nationally advancing clean energy technologies, notably through the "Pathways to Commercial Liftoff" reports, which were roadmaps developed with the private sector on how to overcome risks preventing technology deployment. While at DOE she also created a new approach to commercialization - Adoption Readiness Levels - which has been embraced by government agencies, publicly traded companies, accelerators and venture capital as a way to guide technology commercialization. Her impact was recognized through her inclusion as one of the world’s 100 most influential business leaders in climate in Time100’s 2024 list. Before her tenure at the Department of Energy, Vanessa was a partner at McKinsey & Company for 13 years, where she co-led the innovation practice, helping public companies commercialize their technologies. Following her time at McKinsey, she founded re.design, a company dedicated to reinventing consumer products to solve everyday challenges and sold her product on QVC. She has also served on the innovation advisory boards of United Technology Corporation and Vanguard. Dr. Chan earned her Ph.D. from MIT and a B.S.E. from the University of Pennsylvania, both in Materials Science and Engineering. She is a working parent and in her personal time, Dr. Chan also runs a pottery studio and is an avid mountain biker, yoga practitioner, skier, and world traveler.

Shelley Sylva is TD Bank's Head of Metro Business Development in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Her mandate includes expanding TD's community engagement strategy across Greater Philadelphia and partnering with stakeholders to refine the Bank's Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) rating. In this role, Sylva supports economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income, diverse, and underserved communities through TD's new $20 billion Community Impact Plan, which she helped develop and deliver. Additionally, she plays a crucial role in building TD's brand in the region and generating new business opportunities. Sylva previously served as TD Bank's US Head of Corporate Citizenship, leading the Bank’s US efforts in philanthropy, employee engagement, and volunteerism. She was instrumental in establishing the Bank's Sustainability platform, driving strategy development and implementation. A bar-admitted attorney, Sylva provided thought leadership, advice, and guidance to the Bank’s US CEO and General Counsel, tapping into her extensive legal and regulatory experience in both city government and the private sector. Sylva also led the TD Ready Commitment, a billion-dollar philanthropic initiative aimed at positively impacting social and environmental issues while elevating communities within the Bank's footprint. Known for her expertise in building talent from within, she managed a team of 30, including lawyers and executive staff, and oversaw a budget of more than $40 million. Sylva's career also includes her role as the Assistant Executive Director of the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA), the fourth-largest housing authority in the United States. At PHA she supervised the Agency’s senior management team, and led significant initiatives, including the redevelopment of public housing high rises into livable communities for the underserved.

Growing up in a family of healthcare professionals, including her mother, Anatalia, Michelle was inspired to help others and recognized early on the transformative power of innovative medicines. Michelle currently serves on the Board of Directors of Trinity Health, Mid-Atlantic. Michelle earned her bachelor’s degree in Anthropology with a minor in Community Health from Tufts University. She is a New Englander at heart and enjoys spending her free time with her husband, four children, and their dog, Milo. Her hobbies include cycling, sailing, and she recently earned her open water PADI certification. 2024 marked the fifth time Michelle participated in C2C4C, a global event where over 350 Bristol Myers Squibb employees from 30 nations collectively ride 6,200 miles on their bicycles to raise funds that are donated to cancer-focused nonprofits around the world.

Aaron Chang is an accomplished executive with over 15 years in the healthcare space. A firm believer in servant leadership, he is committed to excellence and leads with one purpose – to help others. Aaron’s thoughtful, authentic, and collaborative leadership style has earned him the respect from his colleagues and national recognition, including Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Emerging Leaders and Becker’s Healthcare Community Hospital Presidents to Know. He currently serves as Jefferson Health’s East Region President, where he is responsible for leading the strategy, operations, and growth for the Southern New Jersey market. With three acute care hospitals and thirty-plus medical group sites, the East region generates approximately $1 billion in revenue. Under Aaron’s leadership, the East Region has achieved significant milestones, including being named one of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Regional Hospitals” - one of only eight in New Jersey - and receiving the publication’s inaugural “Best Regional Hospital Award for Equitable Access.” His unwavering focus on patient safety has led all three hospitals to earn Leapfrog’s coveted “A” rating. Financially, Aaron has consistently delivered strong results, outperforming budget expectations and enabling substantial reinvestments to expand access and improve community health. Notable projects include the development of state-of-the-art medical oncology and radiation oncology suites at the Cherry Hill campus, and a multi-specialty outpatient center in Washington Township - transformative initiatives that have enhanced care for countless patients. Aaron holds a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Science from the University of California, Davis, and a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration from California State University, East Bay. Outside of his Jefferson responsibilities, Aaron serves as a board member for the New Jersey Hospital Association, Southern New Jersey Development Council, Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey, and the Camden Coalition. In his free time, Aaron enjoys adventuring with his wife and their two children.

Penny Wan is a board member and biotech executive in the biopharmaceutical industry. For more than two decades Ms.Wan has led the delivery of lifesaving and life-changing biopharmaceutical therapies to patients and their caregivers. Ms. Wan’s professional expertise closely mirrors her personal circumstances, and she has successfully brought to bear her roles as a daughter, wife, mother, business leader and caregiver to inform the decisions she makes in her everyday work. Ms. Wan’s career spans some of life’s critical life milestones from women’s health, infant formula and childhood vaccines up through cancer treatments, mental health and antidepressants, biologics for arthritis, post-menopausal osteoporosis affecting the elderly, stroke and high-risk cardiovascular disease. She recently co-founded HerAnova Lifesciences, a startup focused on women’s health and serves as the company’s chairwoman. Ms. Wan serves as Independent Director of the Board for Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories since January 2022, an integrated global pharmaceutical company serving +800 million patients globally across 76 countries across US, Europe and Emerging markets. Until 2020, she served as Vice President and Regional General Manager, Japan, and Asia Pacific, for Amgen, through which she was instrumental in building Amgen’s commercial presence across the region, ensuring that innovative medicines reached patients, payers, and physicians in these markets. Prior to Amgen, Penny was general manager of Roche Pharma China, which became one of the fastest-growing multinational corporation in the country. She spearheaded innovative partnership solutions with government, professional and patient groups to improve access and outcomes for patients. During her time in China, Ms. Wan served as an executive committee member of RDPAC (R&D based Pharmaceutical Association Committee), where she led the industry-shaping efforts in biologics and served as Vice President of the Shanghai Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investments. She received the 2013 White Magnolia Memorial Award from the Shanghai municipality in recognition of her contributions to the city. Penny currently serves as an independent non-executive director on the board of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd. She is also a member of the International Woman’s Forum and a member of the Philadelphia chapter of the Women Corporate Directors Foundation. Penny brings deep experience across healthcare. She has comprehensive management experience and strategic skills in leading sales and marketing, manufacturing, business development, start-up, country, and regional operations in global markets, including China and Japan in world class pharma and healthcare companies. Penny graduated from Monash University with a bachelor’s degree of Science (Hons.) with majors in Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology. She received her Graduate Diploma in Business Administration at Monash University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong and is a certified Executive Coach.

Russ Wilkin is the Senior Vice President of Brand & Cafes at Saxbys – an education company disguised as a coffee company. Through its Experiential Learning Platform (E.L.P.), Saxbys partners with colleges to empower students to run their own on-campus businesses, gaining real executive leadership experience in the real world. Today, there are over 30 Saxbys E.L.P. cafes across 8 states. Russ leads the full cafe ecosystem – from operations and training for more than 1,000 student team members, to coffee sourcing, roasting, and the supply chain that fuels both Saxbys cafes and wholesale partners. He originally joined Saxbys to build its brand and product teams, and still oversees both today. Before Saxbys, Russ spent several years in brand management at Campbell Soup Company, growing household names like Campbell’s, V8, and Prego. He’s also served on the board of Net Impact Philadelphia and as Chair of the Asian Network of Campbell. Russ earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Towson University and an MBA from the University of Maryland. A Maryland native who’s lived in Chicago, Baltimore, and DC, he now calls Fishtown home with his wife, Bre and daughter, Leona.
